A Roanoke City police officer is returning to full duty today after being cleared in the shooting of a Northwest Roanoke man.
A citizen-police review board and Chief Joe Gaskins say officer M.E. Thompson's actions were justified.

The shooting happened on Madison Avenue in the early morning hours of April 13th.
Officer Thompson and another officer responded to a loud music call, and stopped a car to talk to its driver.
They say when Antonio Taylor tried to drive away, he hit Officer Thompson.
Thompson fired four shots into the car, which hit the front of a house and stopped.
Taylor survived a gunshot to the chest.
The Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney also cleared the officer of wrongdoing.

A Roanoke infant drowned in a bathtub over the weekend. Police say the boy's mother told them she put 10 month old David Anthony Hopkins in the bathtub with her three year old son to answer a knock on the door. When she returned, the younger child was found in the water. The child was transported to Community Hospital, but was not revived.

(ON CAM OPEN)

Early this morning, an American soldier from the 4th Infantry Division was killed, and two others wounded, when someone threw a homemade bomb near a police station in the northern town of Baqouba. Here in Baghdad, grenades were lobbed at two trucks driving near the British embassy ... The violence again raises fears that this city hasn't seen the end of attacks like the one last week, at the Jordanian embassy.

V/O FBI agents were sifting through the debris of the embassy this morning. The building was levelled by a truck bomb last Thursday, killing at least 17 people, all of them Iraqis.
The attack heightened fears already circulating that foreign terrorist groups...are .gathering. here.
US administrator Paul Bremer said that "hundreds of Islamic militants who fled the country during the war...are returning, and planning major terrorist attacks." Some, he claims, have ties to Al Qaeda.

(sot paul bremer -u.s.administrator in iraq)

"AMONG THE TERRORIST GROUPS WE ARE CONCERNED, ABOUT ANSAR AL-ISLAM IS CERTAINLY HIGH ON THE LIST."

(Basra Reuters)

To make matters worse for the Americans, there are daily riots in southern Iraq. Dodgy power and fuel supplies, combined with temperatures above 130 degrees, have made for an explosive combination in Basra. People have vented their anger, throwing stones, at British soldiers and supply trucks.

(ON CAM CLOSE)

The Americans seem to be trying to ease the tension, by keeping a lower profile. Here in Baghdad, and in nearby Najaf and Faluja, there appear to be far fewer soldiers on the streets. Kimberly Dozier, CBS News, Baghdad.))
