School Safety is becoming an issue in the November elections.
Today, William Fralin said he will work to secure additional funding for alternative education programs if he's elected to the General Assembly.
Fralin is running as a Republican in the 17th House district. He called a news conference this morning outside the fence at Patrick Henry High School.
He said school administrators must have the resources to remove disruptive students from the classroom.

She says the level of state funding for schools is an overriding issue. Localities don't need new programs, Wyatt says, but adequate funding for programs already in place.

A team looking into whether discipline and incidents of violence in the Roanoke school system were under-reported to the state has issued its findings.
The three person team from the Virginia Department of Education visited the school system a month ago, following allegations that officials under- reported incidents of crime, violence and discipline.
Last night, a spokesperson for the team told the school board they did NOT uncover any evidence of under- reporting during their week long stay.
Board member Melinda Payne belives Roanoke schools are safe overall-- and says the job now is to convince the public.

Virginia is giving the green flag to an innovative idea to promote tourism and economic development.
Governor Mark Warner took to the pits at Martinsville Speedway today to launch the "Virginia Motorsports Initiative".
The three-part plan will focus on recruiting racing-related businesses to Virginia, supporting Martinsville and Virginia's 36 other tracks, and research and development.
Warner says it is too soon to predict how many jobs or dollars the plan will attract.
The initiative is based on a similar effort in Great Britain.
Hokie fans can now support their team even when they go to buy groceries.

A record heat wave in Europe is taking its toll on landmarks that have stood the test of time--
[SUPER=03-Valais Region, Switzerland;]
Glaciers in Switzerland have shrunk to levels not seen in 150 years.
Experts say that record temperatures have sped up what HAS been a long melting process.
Many say global warming, brought on by the excessive production of greenhouse gases, is to blame.
The melting of the glaciers threatens those living in nearby valleys with flash floods and mudslides.
Eventually, the phenomenon could even put water supplies at risk.
Meanwhile, some overheated polar bears in Germany might appreciate some fragments of those melting glaciers--
For now, zoo keepers and volunteers are giving large blocks of ice to the bears to help them cool off from the scorching temperatures.
Their bodies are designed to withstand extreme cold, not extreme heat.
After reading an ad in a local newspaper, families in Berlin turned out in large numbers to stand in line and pass out ice to the bears-- which brought them some relief from the heat as well..

Police say the car pulled out from a side road in front of the cement truck. The truck driver was not hurt.
