Virginia Tech professor Richard Hirsh has studied electric power for more than 20-years.
He says yesterday's blackout was almost inevitable because of the grid system's complex technology.
Hirsh and other researchers at Tech are now working to develop what they say is a more reliable system, called distributed generation.

A man and a woman were both fatally shot late last night in what police say were apparently random shootings.
Police aren't releasing the victims names until family is told.
At about 10:20 p-m, a man was shot while pumping gas at a Speedway near Charleston. The second fatal shooting happened a little more than an hour later and ten miles away outside another convenience store.
Police have not identified the weapon or weapons used in the shootings.

Smith Mountain Lake has had its first boating fatality this year.
State game wardens say two bass boats carrying four men crashed into each other last night.
The accident happened about 8 o'clock near the old Cape Carolyn Marina.
The collision left 60-year-old Ray Swim of Moneta with severe head injuries.
He died later at the hospital.
So far, no one has been charged.

That deadline came and went without an agreement or comment from the company.

A new study links over the counter painkillers such as ibuprophen and aspirin to early miscarraige.
The drugs are called non steroidal anti inflammatories- Some common names are Advil, Motril and generic ibuprofen.
Women in the study who took NSAIDS (en-saids) increased their risk of miscarriage by 80 percent. The same held true for women who used aspirin.
The risk of miscarriage was higher still when the painkillers were taken around conception or were used for longer than a week.
