A historic restaurant in Amherst County was heavily damaged by a fire.

The blaze broke out at the Briar Patch Restaurant around 9 o'clock yesterday morning. Investigators say the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen area. The restaurant first opened in 1948, and is a well known landmark in the area.

Davis says that water pressure is what pulled the man under. He also says the water there stays in the low 60's -- cold enough to cause hypothermia after only a short time. The victim was taken to Giles Memorial Hospital for observation.

The S-C-L-C is asking the U-S Department of Education and the Justice Department to conduct the investigation. City Manager Darlene Burcham declined a request for an interview, but says she has not heard from the S-C-L-C, and denies the city has used racist policies.

Sheriff's officials in Carroll County say the community helped in nabbing a man who was allegedly running a methamphetamine lab near his home.
36- year- old Ronnie Clark Bobbitt is being held in the Surry County jail, awaiting extradition.
His arrest was the culmination of an investigation last Friday.
Authorities say the lab was located in a building beside a residence on Pipers Gap Road.
It was capable of producing as much as four- thousand dollars in methamphetamines.

A two year old Bath County boy has died from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car Saturday. Samuel Isaiah Salmons died at U-V-A medical Center yesterday morning. He was hit on Route 2-20 in Bath County near the town of Mitchell. State Police say the boy was under the supervision of his mother when he ran into the road. No charges have been filed.

Police in Lynchburg say two people were shot Saturday night. Police responded to reports of a shooting near the 900 block of Floyd Street, and found 18-year old Ricardo Hytower shot in the hip. A block and a half away police found 23 year old Terell MacMillan shot in the back of the head. Both were taken to Lynchburg General hospital, though officers say the injuries were not life-threatening.
