A business on West Main Street in Salem caught fire late this morning.
The fire at Northwest True Value Hardware near Butt Hollow Road broke out around 11:15, and officials say the damage is extensive.
Salem and Roanoke County firefighters are working to get the fire under control.
We have crews in the area and we'll have more on it as soon as possible.

Israel is considering if and when its military will respond to yesterday's deadly bus bombing in Jerusalem.
The Palestinian Prime Minister, meanwhile, is expected to decide whether to shift policy and order the arrests of Palestinian militants.

This morning, Israeli security forces tightened their control around Palestinian towns and cities, building new roadblocks and making travel by Palestinians almost impossible.
At least 20 people died in the suicide attack-- many of the victims were children.

A tractor trailer accident in Roanoke County sent one person to the hospital this morning.

It happened around ten this morning on Route 419 at the interchange to Interstate 81.
Police say an unidentified woman came off the interstate and attempted to cross over onto Route 419.
A tractor trailer heading northbound had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the vehicle's tail.
The load on the tractor trailer then shifted, pinning the driver against the steering wheel.
The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The United Steelworkers union asked Goodyear yesterday for more information about the latest offer to come out of five months of bargaining.
The union represents 19- thousand Goodyear workers at plants in Virginia and ten other states.
Also included are 22- thousand retired workers.

Not one, but two separate wildfires are burning on national forest land in Oregon.
Authorities still don't know what started either of them.

The Bear Butte Fire and the Booth Fire are both burning on opposite ends of Camp Sherman.
Both blazes reportedly grew between 800 and a thousand acres in just a matter of hours.
The fires forced the evacuations of campgrounds.
Air tankers are being used to drop water on the blazes.
President Bush, meanwhile, had planned to visit the national forest as part of a trip to talk about forest thinning and wildfire prevention.
It's not known if he still plans on going.

In order to locate in Vinton- the town's voters would have to approve the facility through a referendum. Right now, Colonial Downs is trying to gather the necessary signatures to put the issue on the November ballot. The company would need about 225 signatures to make that happen.

Franklin County is undertaking a multi-million-dollar plan to pipe water from Smith Mountain Lake to other parts of the county.
The Board of Supervisors approved financing for the first phase of the project at its meeting last night.
The county estimates it will cost 3-point-6 MILLION dollars to build a water line from Bedford County to the Westlake Corner area... but the entire project could cost more than 50-million.
It hopes to start work early next year and complete it in in 2005.
A public hearing on the financing will be held September 16th.

The Art Museum will preserve some of its masterpieces with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Roanoke institution will put the 20-thousand dollar grant towards the conservation of 27- paintings by Thomas Eakins. The paintings, and one of Eakins' sculptures, will then be ready for display. The Art Museum says Eakins was regarded as one of the most important realists in American Art. The exhibit is expected to launch the Art Museum to national prominence.

After the rolling around ended, Stackhouse threw a wild punch that the coach wasn't too wild about. He went then over got in Stackhouse's face and ordered him to sit out. When Stackhouse turned away, Fassel picked up the player's helmet and threw it at the back of his legs and told him to run two laps. Later Darnell Dinkins and Wayne Lucier got into it.
There was another scuffle, and then a midfield meeting, in which Fassel warned the team that the next player to fight was being sent home.
