People who have avoided paying their state taxes will get a break.
Virginia's amnesty program kicks off today. The program will help balance the state budget. The idea is that people who have fallen behind on paying their taxes will have nine weeks to pay back their debts under favorable rates. Those who DON'T will face an additional 20 percent penalty on their unpaid balances, as well as up to five years in jail and a hefty fine.
The program is expected to raise about 48-point-five million dollars, all of which will go into the 52 billion dollar state budget.
