Ritter made Threes Company a smash hit in the 1970s and staged a comeback with new comedy 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. He was taping new episodes of that show when he collapsed on the set Thursday. Doctors say Ritter was killed by an undetected flaw in his heart but to those who knew him well, his heart was the best thing about him.

Ritter graduated from Hollywood High School and years later, found a permanent home here when he was awarded a star on the Walk of Fame.
Johns star was placed next to his fathers Western film star and country musician Tex Ritter. All morning, fans have been coming by to leave flowers and other things to remember him by.

An elected official from our area is facing serious charges tonight.
At issue is whether Bedford County Supervisor Kiry Richardson was involved in an illegal scam to win approval for a road project near Smith Mountain Lake.

A grand jury today indicted Richardson on 82 separate charges including 39 counts of forgery, one count of soliciting perjury and one count of obstructing justice.

Roanoke City police teamed up with the A-T-F this morning during a raid on this house on Melrose Avenue. 58- year- old Donald M. Boysaw was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. 20 criminal defendants have been charged since the task force was created two months ago. Brownlee says, because of the task force, some cases are sent straight to federal court. The group hopes to soon expand the program into Lynchburg and Central Virginia.

The vote was unanimous, though the United States and France abstained from voting. A deal was reached this week to partially compensate relatives of the victims of a French airliner bombing in 1989. It was that agreement that cleared the way for today's vote. The move was really only a symbolic gesture, because the sanctions had been suspended indefinitely --after Libya handed over suspects in the bombing of a Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland a year earlier.

A U-S-Canadian task force cites what it describes as "an apparent voltage collapse'' on the day of the blackout in parts of the power grid around northern Ohio and eastern Michigan. The task force says problems were observed "well before'' midday on August 14th -- across several states. A time-line released by investigators failed to indicate just what triggered the black out. More work will be done to pinpoint the cause.
