Workers at the Salvation Army in Roanoke are loading up a truck with supplies.
They'll pull out as soon as they're needed.
Their mobile canteen has a small kitchen, but it can serve meals to 400 people a day.

An anti- abortion group from Petersburg brought its protest to Roanoke this morning.
The demonstration provoked an angry response as the group shifted its focus from abortion clinics to local schools.

A recent inspection at Virginia Tech shows the university's overcrowded classrooms violates state fire codes.

The inspection took place LAST Wednesday, about a week after a photo in the Roanoke Times showed students sitting in the aisles of a lecture hall. Inspectors found one violation--an a-v cart that was blocking an aisle--which was corrected on-site. However, officials later discovered that the 329 students enrolled in the class actually exceeded the room's posted occupancy of 300.

It now appears the six week timetable for former Hokie Michael Vick's return to playing for the Atlanta Falcons was overly optimistic.

The Express will not have left winger Jason Jaffray on opening night. Jaffray has signed a one way contract with the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins in Wilkesbar, Pennsylvania. Now Wheeling is the ECHL affiliate and there is a slight chance Jaffray could play for the Nailors this season. Jaffray had 85 points this past season for the Express. 34 goals and 51 assists.
