Governor Warner has put National Guard troops on alert and dispatched 500 extra state police troopers to the coast to help evacuate residents.

Bedford County schools will close two hours early tomorrow. Charlotte County is canceling class for Thursday and Friday. Campbell County Schools will close two hours early.
Halifax Christian School is closed tomorrow. Halifax County has closed for tomorrow and Friday. The school offices there will close at noon tomorrow and will remain closed Friday.
Longwood University has canceled classes for tonight, Thursday and Friday.
Pittsylvania County schools will close tomorrow at one. Also the Substitute Teacher training has been postponed.

A man with a gun and a knife is apparently holding a classroom full of students hostage at a Tennessee college.

Officials say the man took the hostages today at Dyersburg State Community College.
No injuries are reported.
School officials say 22 students were enrolled in the class --but it's not clear just how many were there at the time.
The school's president has told state officials that the person holding the hostages may be a fellow student.
