The U-S military says a helicopter gunship went into action after a patrol was ambushed, and attackers ran into a house.

For President Bush it was a skeptical audience at the United Nations. Facing many of the same world leaders who were against the war in the first place, Mr. Bush was now asking them to contribute troops and money to rebuild Iraq.

State police say 70-year-old Nelson Halay pulled out from a side road onto Route 58 in the Brosville area.
A pickup truck hit Halay's car broadside.
Police say Halay died at the scene.

Botetourt County authorities credit alert residents for helping them find three people now charged with a string of recent burglaries.
21 year old James Justin Turner of Weyers (Weers) Cave, 20 year old Chris W. Davis of Eagle Rock, and a 17 year old female are under arrest.

They're upset that the Life Center of Galax wants to locate a methadone clinic at the corner of Ogden Road and Colonial Avenue. Neighbors say the facility has no place in a residential area. They're voicing concerns over traffic and nearby schools.

Authorities say they have put a multi-state drug operation out of business in Halifax County, one that allegedly distributed millions of dollars' worth of crack and cocaine in the last two years. Seven men from South Boston, Danville and Maryland are under arrest, charged with drug possession and distribution. Authorities say the alleged ring stretched from New York to North Carolina.

The U-S Senate has confirmed western Virginia's newest federal judge. Glen Conrad is a Radford native, nominated by President Bush back in April.
He's spent his entire adult life working in the federal judicial system -- first as a probation officer and then as a U-S Magistrate in Charlottesville and Roanoke. Judge Conrad will fill the position created when Judge James Turk assumed senior status last year.
