Good evening once again everybody and welcome to Friday Football Extra.
The temperatures dropped tonight for the first time season, but in many venues the action on the field stayed rather warm - in fact it was smoking at our spotlight game of the week in Gretna.
[GRAPHIC=BYRD/CAVE SPRING]
We'll get to that in just a moment, but first let's head over to South Roanoke County and Dwight Bogle Stadium where the unbeaten Cave Spring Knights took on county rival William Byrd on Homecoming 2003.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=53-Roanoke Co./William Byrd vs. Cave Spring; :00]
The Knights crowned Sarah Combiths this year's queen and one of Cave's players Ben Bredenkamp was named King.
But he quickly decided to be a Knight for the second half as try to erase Byrd's 6-to-nothing lead.
Cave Spring quarterback Kenny Horan will go to the air and he will connect with number 23 Matt Currie, and the senior will pick up 19 yards on the play, but the drive would come up empty.
Byrd would then go on the offensive. Aaron Connor would play the role of the workhorse for the Terriers as he gets the call, gets some room and picks up solid yardage on the ground.
Cave Spring would feel the need to score in the fourth. This time Horan will hook up with Sam Cole for the 13 yard pickup, but again the Knights could not find the endzone.
Byrd would regain control and clinch the win with a 25 play, clock crunching drive - capped by this 2 yard keep by Jeff Highfill.

William Byrd gets the 12-to-six win and hands Cave its first loss of the year.

[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=53-Bedford/Rustburg vs. Liberty; :00]
A nice night for some home COOKING during homeCOMING weekend in Bedford..
First quarter action, Liberty would strike first.. number 7, Chris Spinner starts up the middle then cuts it back outside, 21 yards for the score, 7-nothing Minutemen..
Rustburg with the ball, David Freeman drops back to pass and he just gets leveled by big Nathan Bryant, the senior tackle with the six-yard loss..
Devils trying to make something happen on offense, Steven Tweedy calling the plays this time, tries to pass then tucks it in.. the ball comes loose and Liberty pounces on it..
[SUPER=50-Rustburg/13/Liberty/31;]
The Minutemen would capitalize three plays later as O.B. Blake calls his own number, finds some room on the outside and takes it in for the ten-yard score, 14-nothing Liberty..

[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=53-Moneta/Amherst Co. vs. Staunton River; :00]
The Golden Eagles found themselves down but not out trailing 20-to-7 at halftime.
Staunton River would give up a field goal to start the third, but then Craig Oliver takes it up the middle and he will take it in for the score. It's now 23-to-13.
The Golden Eagles got a field goal themselves and then another TD.
Wiley Foxx takes off down the right sideline and he will carry the mail all the way to five yard line before he's stopped on the play.
Jamar Nichols will then sweep right and right in for the score. The game is now tied at 23-all early in the fourth quarter.
Amherst would get itself off the mat and Chris Parrish will complete a clock eating drive with the score.

The Lancers stay unbeaten, but not without a struggle winning it
Amherst County wins it 30 to 23.

(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=53-Lynchburg/Patrick Henry vs. Heritage; :00]
Start things off with one of the few offensive highlights for Patrick Henry.. Muhammed Greco with the 38-yarder to pull P-H within four, 10-to-6 in the third quarter..
Patriots with the ball again, last play of the quarter, Mike Young looking to pass.. you hear that siren? Call the police because Donnie Alexander just stole this pass, stopping the Patrick Henry drive..
Both teams made lots of mistakes, but Heritage had enough to survive, Chris Cook takes the handoff and somehow finds his way through the line for the 10-yard score.. Pioneers on top 16-to-6..
[super=50-Patrick Henry/6/Heritage/16;]
That's how it would end as P-H and Mike Young couldn't find the end zone all night, Heritage stays unbeaten.. Patriots still looking for that first "W".

But it's not that easy to turn things around against a team like Franklin County - tonight's opponent.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=53-Roanoke/Franklin Co. vs. William Fleming; :00]
It was an absolutely beautiful night at Victory Stadium as the sky provided a picturesque backdrop for the Colonels and Eagles.
The Eagles come out strong on an 8 play drive. This 18 yard run by Ronnie Edwards will get Franklin County on board first as he straps on the Eagle wings and soars in. 7-to-0 Eagles.
Fleming would make sure the Eagles knew that they were ready to break out of their funk. Julius Childress bobbles it, then gets a handle and then returns the rock deep into Franklin County territory.
The Eagles' defense then got stingy stopping the Colonels on three straight plays to force a fourth and one situation.

[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=53-Low Moor/Hidden Valley vs. Alleghany; :00]
In Low Moor tonight the Mounties' band was busting move in the stands as Randall Allen was busting a second half move on the field.
The Mounties trailed the Titans 13-to-7, but not for long as Allen rolls in on the short 8 yard TD stretch. It's now 13-all after the missed kick.
The Mountaineers would then get a Titan turnover and Allen will make them pay as he pounds it up the middle and scores again. Allen finished the night with 250 yards rushing on 37 carries. It's 21-to-13 after the 2 point conversion.
But the Titans would get some inspiration by taking it up top. Brad Oliver hits Jud Carte on the slant pattern and he will take it to the far side and pick up 32 yards before he's corralled.
A few plays later - Oliver connects with Nick Viar across the middle on the nine yard TD. The Titans cut the lead to 21-to-19.
[SUPER=50-Hidden Valley/19/Alleghany/28;]

The Wildcats are on the prowl late in the first as Chase Prasnicky has his pass picked off by Broadway's John Jacobs who gets the ball back in the hands of his offensive mates.
The Gobblers will then make their move from their own 41 as John Billhimer hands off to Damien Organ who cuts into the open and picks up 35 yards on the carry.
