State Police have canceled this evening's Amber Alert for a local child.

The alert was issued for six year old Candice Leigh Parker of Christiansburg around nine o'clock this evening.
At that time-- police were looking for Barbara Scott Parker in connection with the child's disappearance.
Police say the child walked into the Roanoke city police department a short time ago.

Candice's mother, Angela, told us the little girl left with her stepmother Barbara Parker around eight o'clock this morning, to see her father.
But, Angela says she later learned that social services took Barbara's daughter away from her last Thursday, and that to make up for that she was going to take Candice.
She says she's aware that the stepmother has a mental illness and that her daughter could be in serious danger.

Danville firefighters rescued a one year old child from a burning home overnight.
They were called to a home on Westover Drive around one am-- where flames and smoke were coming out of a second floor bedroom.
The rescued baby had burns to the face and hands and suffered smoke inhalation. No word on the child's identity or condition.
Fire officials say a kerosene heater started the blaze.

Back in 1999, the General Assembly passed legislation requiring public schools to include character in their curriculum.

A home on Chatham Street is being built by a team from Habitat for Humanity, but you won't find any men on the job.
Once completed, it will become the fourth home in Roanoke to be built by an "All Women" crew.
Habitat for Humanity officials say they were losing a lot of their women builders because they didn't always feel comfortable working with men.
The women say there's nothing like seeing a completed project.

The Ferrum Panthers improved to 3 and 1 this afternoon, picking up their first conference victory over Averett.

It was homecoming today for Dave Davis and the Panthers.
Ferrum marched down the field on the opening possession. Dustin Hamoy cashed in from a couple of yards out to make it 7-nothing.
But the Panthers gave up four first half fumbles to the Cougars. Joseph Bateman recovered that one, but Averett came up empty.
Ferrum found the endzone again when Jermaine Pitts went deep for Darren Baker on the 41 yard hookup to make it 14 to 3.
The home team intercepted four Averett passes in the opening half. Two from Jamirez Poindexter

and two more by Leroy Howard and the Panthers went on to win 27 to 9.

Another great crowd turned out for the fourth annual Western Virginia Education Classic this afternoon to watch Virginia Union take on St. Augustines College out of Raleigh and take in some serious food.
Defense and special teams would dominate the game as Union's Virgil Burton was a beast on defense all day long for the Panthers.
The offenses struggled in the red zone. Two Union scores were wiped out by penalties and the stadium's track also wiped out
Terrence Dance at the two yard line.
That put the game on the toes of Union's #14 Tony Oby. He hit five out of five field goals in first three quarters, i
ncluding this blast that bounces in off of the cross bar.
Virginia Union wins the contest 30 to 15, but the game is only part of this party.
Miss Virginia Nancy Redd was on hand at halftime to welcome the crowd.
And the William Fleming drum line provided the entertainment

The proceeds help TAP's Project Dropout program that is designed to keep kids in school in the Roanoke Valley.
