The 310 foot ferry was carrying about 15 hundred passengers when it plowed into huge wooden pilings- the scene was a mass of shattered planks, broken glass and twisted steel.
Tonight investigators are questioning one of the ferry's captains who apparently left the scene and tried to commit suicide.

A Henry County Sheriff's Deputy was hit by a car while directing traffic this afternoon.
State Police say deputy Craig Oder (o-Dare), Junior was directing traffic outside Carver Middle School when he was hit around 3:30.
75 year old Lorene Merriman Cruise of Collinsville said she was blinded by the sun and didn't see the deputy.
Oder (o-Dare) was treated at Martinsville Memorial Hospital and released.

Troopers also identified the man killed in an accident on Route 220 in Franklin County yesterday.
23 year old Jason Brian Easter of Martinsville died when his car ran into the median, crossed the northbound lanes and hit a tree.

V-Dot is currently asking local governments along the I-81 corridor to consider if one or both proposals merit further consideration.
An I-81 Advisory Panel will then decide which plan to move forward with by December.

Roanoke police say Jenni Northrup and her mother have decided that continuing with the investigation into Jenni's alleged abduction would be too emotionally draining. They asked that the case not be pursued. Jenni disappeared from the Williamson Road area in late September. The 16-year old turned up in Central Virginia a week later claiming to have been kidnapped by two men. No arrests have been made. Police say, unless they hear from anyone with information to support the kidnapping claim, the case is closed.

Tourism officials in Bedford County are trading the mobile home they currently work in for a new 10-thousand square foot visitors center.. and they hope future tourists appreciate the difference.
