A woman driving on the Parkway between 7:30 and 8 yesterday morning saw a man running on the Roanoke River Bridge. As she passed him, he climbed over the railing, turned his back toward the Niagra Dam and squatted down. Roanoke County police estimate it's about a 200-foot drop from the bridge to the river. Nobody actually saw the man fall but police found a suicide note, wallet and cell phone nearby. They have yet to release his identity or find his body.

Rice's attorneys filed a motion asking the judge to delay his trial so they can ask Attorney General John Ashcroft to dismiss the death penalty.
The trial is set to begin in Charlottesville federal court next week.
Rice is charged with a hate crime in the murders of two women in the Shenandoah National Park seven years ago.
[SUPER=03-Shenandoah National Park/May 1996;]

His attorneys say new DNA evidence from the FBI shows that hair samples taken from the crime scene did NOT belong to Rice or the victims.
BUT the lab said they were microscopically similar to hairs taken from serial killer Richard Evonitz.
Evonitz killed himself in Florida last summer.
Afterward, he was linked to the murders of three Virginia girls: Sofia Silva and sisters Kristin and Kati Lisk.

The case against an 11 year old Vinton boy who allegedly is responsible for strangling a cat and dipping it in antifreeze is now being considered by a judge.
The boy was charged with animal cruelty earlier this month for the August killing of a cat named Sandy.
Sandy's owner, Mark Palmer, went looking for his pet and found her dead with a rubber band around her neck and coat drenched in anti- freeze. Yesterday friends of the boy testified that he bragged to them about the killing, but he maintains he only *witnessed* the event and then petted the cat after it was already dead. The 11- year- old did, however, say the rubber band around the cat's neck could have been one he discarded earlier. The boy is being held at the Coyner Springs Detention Center.
