(( IT'S SORT OF A BREAST CANCER CAMERA CALLED THERMOGRAPHIC IMAGING. IT'S TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN ZERO-IN ON THE HEAT EMITTED FROM TUMORS, AND FIND BREAST CANCER AT THE EARLIEST, MOST CURABLE STAGES.

SOT Dr. Gerald Goldberg

Track BREAST CANCER STRIKES 200,000 WOMEN EACH YEAR IN THE U.S., AND IT KILLS MORE THAN 40,000. THE BEST TEST TO CATCH IT EARLY IS THE MAMMOGRAM, BUT THAT TEST HAS IT'S LIMITATIONS.

SOT DR. GERALD GOLDBERG

"Well the rate of success of mammography is obviously very good, but it can still miss about 30% of some cases of cancer."
Track THAT'S WHY SOME EXPERTS LIKE DR. GERALD GOLDBERG, ARE NOW USING A TECHNIQUE CALLED THERMAL BREAST IMAGING OR THERMOGRAPHY TO FIND MORE CANCERS, EARLIER THAN EVER BEFORE.

SOT BRIDGE

"Thermography uses the same imaging system as satellites to detect the subtle heat differences between cancerous tumors and benign conditions like fibrocystic disease."

SOT GOLDBERG

"Well breast cancer is going to be associated with increased blood vessels, increased heat. Whereas a benign cyst will have a dark black area b/c there's no blood vessels associated with a cyst."
Track AND SINCE BLOOD VESSELS OFTEN FORM BEFORE THE TUMOR--THERMOGRAPHY MAY CATCH BREAST CANCER YEARS BEFORE THE MAMMOGRAM. COMBINE THE TWO, AND THE DETECTION RATE DRAMATICALLY IMPROVES.

SOT GOLDBERG

"It's best used when it's used with mammography, and statistics have shown you can get a 95% pick-up rate if you do both a mammogram and thermal imaging together."
VO PLUS THE PROCEDURE DOESN'T COMPRESS THE BREAST TISSUE, OR USE ANY RADIATION, MAKING IT AN IDEAL TEST FOR YOUNG WOMEN AT RISK.
TAG THERMOGRAPHY IS FDA APPROVED, COSTS ABOUT 145 DOLLARS, AND INSURANCE DOESN'T USUALLY COVER IT. BUT ONLY TRAINED DOCTORS PERFORM THE TEST, AND SINCE NO MEDICATION IS NEEDED, NEITHER IS A PRESCRIPTION. DR. SEAN KENNIFF, CBS NEWS MIAMI.))
