A former law-school student accused of going on a shooting spree in Grundy says he's innocent of three slayings.

At the end of a hearing yesterday, Peter Odighizuwa told a Buchanan County judge he is NOT guilty by reason of insanity.
The judge says he didn't ask for a plea and told the defendant to enter his plea later.

Two men were killed while trying to remove the tires from a 53 foot trailer.

It happened around eight last night in the 39-hundred block of Old Catawba Road.
Officials say the trailer apparently shifted off of its supports and pinned 43-year-old Ronald Caldwell of Roanoke and 46-year-old Robert Thomas Junior of Salem against the wall of an out building.
Both men were pronounced dead when rescue crews arrived.

The Secret Service says a woman who broke through a security barrier did not intend to harm the president.

29-year-old Betina Mixon drove her car through a security perimeter where President Bush was speaking. The car rammed into the building and officials immediately dragged the woman from the car and took her three young children inside. Bush was inside the building about 40 yards from the car -- authorities say he was in no danger. Mixon is charged with trespassing. The F-B-I says it appears she was trying to find her mother in law, who was attending the president's speech.

Authorities have closed the beach where a teenage surfer lost her arm to a shark bite yesterday.

Authorities say 13 year old Bethany Hamilton was lying on her board when a shark bit her arm. Apparently, it was a clean bite, and Hamilton lost her arm just below the shoulder. The size of the bite suggests the shark was 12 to 15 feet long, and the beach has since been closed.

It's called the Appalling Pumpkin Apocalypse. Actually, that's just a fancy name for a big pumpkin drop in Davenport, Iowa. The gourds were lifted in a cherry picker to a height of 50 feet and dropped to their squishy doom. The prize for the owner of the pumpkin that made the largest splat? A Smashing Pumpkins C-D set, of course!
