Yesterday afternoon, the university's Corps of Cadets honored one of its own killed in Iraq.

Thirteen American soldiers were killed when their helicopter was shot down by a missile this morning.
They were flying into Baghdad's airport and to begin their leaves when it happened.
More than 20 other troops were injured.
In a separate attack this morning, someone threw a grenade at an American convoy.
Bystanders say four people died, but the military is not confirming that attack.

A series of fatal accidents near the UVA/NC State game last night claimed six lives.

The accidents happened near Carter-Finley Stadium in North Carolina, shortly after the game ended.
Authorities say two cars collided, setting off a deadly chain of events.
A group of pedestrians went into the road to help.
THEY were then hit by a van.
Police say the van's driver was driving drunk.
North Carolina State Police are still not releasing the names and hometowns of the six people who died.
It's not clear whether any of them had attended the game.

Also making medical headlines, 30 women are participating in a Virginia Tech diet study. Researchers are study the safety of both the Atkins diet and a low fat diet. They'll be looking at how a diet affect things such as bone health and body composition, and the risk of disease.

Alpha Kappa Alpha held it's annual Pink Ice Ball in Roanoke last night. The group bestowed Unsung Heroes awards to six people who have enhanced the lives of others behind the scenes. A special award was given to the Roanoke City Police Department. Chief Joe Gaskins was on hand to accept the award. Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest African american Greek letter sorority.
