V-DOT reports numerous trees down with the hardest hit areas including Roanoke, Botetourt and Wythe Counties.
This tree at 18th and Melrose in Roanoke fell this morning, taking power lines with it. And a power outage near Brambleton Avenue and Overland blacked out traffic lights, giving one police officer an opportunity to brush up on his directing skills. A-E-P says about one thousand households in the Roanoke district are without power, down from about 3-thousand this morning. A spokesman says scattered outages are expected as long as the wind continues.

They've been battling a small brush fire on Big Falls Road all day.
Investigators believe a train may have started the 3-acre fire. Firefighters have put the flames out several times, but the rough terrain and 30-mile an hour winds are making it hard to keep out. The fire is contained right now, but crews will remain on the scene throughout the night in case it flares up again.

A power outage knocked WDBJ off the air for about 45 minutes today.

THEN a transfer switch on THAT system malfunctioned.

The flu is hitting Virginia hard.
The state health department is reporting a higher-than-normal number of flu cases.
It says it usually doesn't confirm the start of the flu season until December, January, or even February.
The department does NOT have specific numbers of flu cases, but it has confirmed some cases and several reports of the flu in different parts of the state.
The early start to the flu season could mean a longer-than-usual or more severe season.

Police in Nashville, Tennessee have arrested Wynonna Judd.

They charged the country singer with driving under the influence.
An officer clocked her Land Rover going 47 miles an hour in a 30-mile-an-hour zone early this morning.

The arrest report says the singer consented to a breath test after police smelled alcohol and noticed her watery eyes and dilated pupils.
Reports say Judd registered more than twice the legal limit of point OH- eight.
She told police she didn't remember how many drinks she'd had.
