Police say 34 year old Tonia Booth Johnston was babysitting 6 month old Coy Kaczor (KAZ-er) Friday night, and called for an ambulance. Investigators say the child had received head injuries consistent with being shaken.

Johnston is being held in the Martinsville-Henry County Jail without bond on felony child abuse charges. The baby is listed in critical condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

An early morning fire was a rude awakening for residents at a Roanoke County apartment complex.

Firefighters say a second-floor unit at Peters Creek Apartments caught fire just before 5 A-M.
Residents were evacuated as smoke spread to several other apartments.
One person was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighers are still investigating what caused the blaze and estimating the damage.

The U-S military is investigating whether groundfire caused a fatal helicopter crash over Iraq.

Seventeen U-S soldiers died after their Black Hawks collided over a residential neighborhood yesterday.
The crash is the single largest loss of American life since the start of the war.
Witnesses said at least one of the Black Hawks may have been hit by ground fire.
The aircraft came from the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Alana Malick (MAH-lik) received first runner up at the Miss Roanoke Valley pageant in April. However, shortly before the Miss Virginia Pageant, the winner resigned and Malick (MAH-lik) became the title holder. Organizers say they were so busy helping her prepare for Miss Virginia, they completely forgot to crown her. Malick received her crown during a luncheon at "Our Lady of the Valley" Retirement Home yesterday.

Doctors say it will make life easier for patients.

French police are investigating what caused the ramp to the Queen Mary 2 to fall yesterday.
Dozens of people plunged 50 feet to the ground.
32 were injured.
The ship is the world's biggest cruise liner at 21 stories tall.

Warner acknowledged that in the last decade, Virginia has lost jobs to Mexico.

Southside textile maker Dan River will be moving some new work to Danville. The company said it lost more than 100 million dollars in the third quarter and sales were down nearly 30 percent.
As a result, Dan River is closing a manufacturing plant in Tennessee. Most of the work that's done there will be moved to Danville.
