Holiday travelers on Business 220 through Martinsville had to take some detours. Just after 1 this afternoon, a mechanical problem with one of two generators at the Martinsville Hydroelectric Dam caused a turbine to spin out of control. Route 220 business was closed for more than 5 hours for fear the spinning turbine might shatter and throw shrapnel into passing traffic. A sluice (slew-is) gate was eventually closed, reducing the flow of water and the spin rate of the turbine. No one was injured, no customers lost power, and traffic has been restored to Route 220 Business.
