This after a strong earthquake shakes much of the state.

The National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado confirms an earthquake of a magnitude of four-point-five hit Virginia shortly before four o'clock.
It was centered about 30 miles west of Richmond in Columbia.

The house is still standing but her next door neighbor did receive some damage.
Here at the Hodge home in the Hollins area, there are cracks in the inside and outside walls.
A grandmother clock stopped, some ornaments were shaken off the Christmas tree, and a few items like this coke can flew off the shelves.

It was a earthquake that was centered about 30 miles west of Richmond and measured 4 point 5 on the Richter scale.


Virginia Tech geological professor Martin Chapman says it was not a strong earthquake by national standards, but unusually strong for Virginia.

That appears to be true so far. There have been no reports of any serious damage throughout the state.
Although this was a moderate earthquake it is not the largest, that came in 1897 when a 5.8 magnitude quake centered in Giles County rolled through Virginia.

Jean, Martin Chapman of Virginia Tech says there have been over 250 earthquakes in Virginia since 1977 but most of them were too small to even be felt.

President Bush today declared five counties and one city in Southwestern Virginia eligible for federal disaster relief.
The counties include Bland, Buchanan, Giles, Smyth, Tazewell and the city of Galax.
That emergency declaration means people can pick up the phone and register with FEMA for federal and state disaster money.

In fact, health officials and some health providers in the Roanoke Valley say what they do have left is already spoken for at this point.

DeAngelo Hall was named a second team all-American by the Sporting News today and he snagged major honor from the Big East.

Hall has been named the conference's co-Big East special teams player of the year. He returned 30 punts this season for an average of 15 yards a kick. He returned two for scores against Syracuse. Hall who played offense as well this season also earned all first team Big East honors as both a kick returner and a defensive back.

Richmond native and current Lexington resident Bobby Ross is the new head coach at West Point.

The VMI was given the Army job today. He inherits a team that just finished its season 0-and-13. Ross has been visiting college programs off and on over the last few years including UVa where Ross's son Kevin is the running backs coach. Expect his son to follow him to New York.
Ross won a national title at Ga. Tech in 1990 and took the Chargers to the Super Bowl in 1994. He turns 67 years old two weeks from today.

The proposed plan would lock in the top 10 drivers after the 26th race and then reset the totals to zero and have those 10 guys fight it out the rest of the season. A delegation from the People's Republic of China watched as Roanoke officers led their animals through a number of training exercises.
The group included Chinese customs officials who use dogs in anti-drug and anti-terrorism operations.
The visitors are studying U-S training methods, and after the demonstration, a leader of the group said he left with a "great impression" of the city's canine cops. (------------)
