These Asiatic Black Bears are the same species as the escaped bears. Mogensen says they're tame creatures that were bottle fed as cubs, but last night, the pair left unerasable marks on Russell and Marilynne Smith's property.

Mogensen first fired his tranquilizer gun, but because the bear had already put on his winter weight it didn't take effect. The Smith's bullet riddled kitchen bares the marks of the more than 20 gunshots it took to finally bring the bear down. The second bear was also shot in the shoulder, but she managed to escape and hasn't been seen since.

The Rockbridge County Sheriff, along with a handful of deputies, responded to the Smith's home during the ordeal, but missing was the county animal control officer.

The discovery of solid waste on the site of Roanoke's new stadium and amphitheater continues to cause problems for the city.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has cited Roanoke for violating state regulations.

The Notice of Violation follows three recent incidents in which workers discovered waste on the construction site.
D- E- Q officials have not determined the amount of the penalty, but agency officials say it will probably amount to less than 10- thousand dollars.

The growing number of flu cases in Virginia has claimed its first lives.

Health officials say three central Virginians recently died of flu-related illnesses. All three were over 50. In far western Virginia, Buchanan County closed schools today because so many students were sick. And the state health department says it has distributed all the doses of flu vaccine that were already ordered.

The ball weighs 3-to-4 hundred pounds, and will be hoisted above the Valleydale Meats building in Salem. Then the ball will drop, welcoming in 2004.
