Mogensen first fired his tranquilizer gun, but because the bear had already put on his winter weight it didn't take effect.
The Smith's bullet riddled kitchen bares the marks of the more than 20 gunshots it took to finally bring the bear down.
The second bear was also shot in the shoulder, but she managed to escape and hasn't been seen since.

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has cited Roanoke for violating state regulations.

Health officials say three central Virginians recently died of flu-related illnesses.
All three were over 50.
In far western Virginia, Buchanan County closed schools today because so many students were sick.
And the state health department says it has distributed all the doses of flu vaccine that were already ordered.
