They're back from Canada, but investigators in the Short family murders didn't find the person they were looking for.

Last week, two Henry County investigators made their fourth trip to Canada.
They met with authorities ... and checked out a small airstrip where they believe a "person of interest" in the case met with a woman in August last year.
So far, they haven't located the woman, but they say they DID get some "helpful information."
To this day, the only "person of interest" has been Gary Bowman, a carpenter from North Carolina who was in Canada during August 2002.

Lawyers are working around the clock to stop the execution of a Christiansburg man.

61-year old James Reid is scheduled to die by lethal injection for the 1996 beating and stabbing of 90-year old Annie Lester.
Reid's attorneys met with the Governor's office last week to ask for clemency. Today, they filed papers with the U-S Supreme court asking for a stay of execution.
In 1997 Reid entered an Alford plea- acknowledging the state's evidence-- without admitting guilt. He's scheduled to die on Thursday.

Henry County is now taking back possession of the old DuPont building it leased to Cerxon almost two years ago.

The county says it probably won't recoup any more than a third of that.

Doug Carnera was checking out property a friend had recently acquired when the two men walked over a knoll and encountered the animal.
An experienced hunter, he had never seen a bear that large in the woods before.

On Thursday night, two Asiatic Black Bears similar to these animals, escaped from their enclosure on property near the Natural Bridge Zoo.
The first bear broke into the home of Russell and Marilynne Smith. It was shot and killed in the Smiths' kitchen when efforts to tranquiilize the animal failed.
The second bear was wounded, but hadn't been seen since it ran into the woods Thursday night.
Carnera says he hadn't heard about the incident when he visited the area on Saturday.

Carnera says he has had mixed emotions about shooting an animal his children had visited at the zoo.

Republican legislators today announced they will introduce fifteen bills in the next session aimed at toughening penalties for drunk drivers.
One would allow a court to permanently confiscate the vehicle of a repeat offender.
Another would increase the penalty for refusing a breath test.
Most of the bills are targeted at repeat offenders, like the one who killed the 26-year-old son of Jim and Janet Fisher of Virginia Beach.

Flu season appeared in Virginia earlier than normal this year prompting many, like these people at a Lewis Gale flu-shot clinic today, to seek out the flu-vaccine. Virginia's Health Department says, this year, there have been just 88-confirmed cases of Type-A flu in the Commonwealth. But many more have come down with flu-like symptoms. That means they're shaky, running a fever, suffering from congestion. It's when the symptoms last more than a couple days that it's time to seek medical help.
