58 year old James Edward Reid had been scheduled to die by lethal injection tomorrow night for the murder of 87-year old Annie Lester.

At around 5:00 this evening a federal court decided to stay the execution.

Keith and Shannon the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals granted the stay of execution based on a recent Alabama case.

In Nelson vs. Campbell, the defendant was granted a stay of execution by the U.S. Supreme court because his medcial condition and problems it could create with the drugs used in lethal injection. The 4th Circuit says it can not allow Reid's execution until this case is settled. Tough news for a family waiting more than 8 years for justice.

Reid was Lester's handyman. Reid hit her over the head with a can of condensed milk and stabbed her 22-times with a pair of scissors. [TAKE PREPRO-REID] Defense attorneys have long argued that Reid, who suffered a brain injury years earlier, was in a state of alcohol induced dementia at the time of the murder and didn't know what happened. Keith and Shannon, I just found out that the Virginia Attorney General's office is planning to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to step in. The office will file a motion by tomorrow morning asking the Supreme Court to overturn the 4th circuit's decision and continue the execution as scheduled.

Two local health departments are now offering the flu shot again. And another has the Flu Mist.

The Roanoke City Health Department now has an additional hundred doses of the serum. But it's only available to those at high risk and on a first-come-first-served basis by appointment.
Lynchburg's Health Department has about 50 doses which it plans to give out at a clinic tomorrow starting at 8:30 a-m.
And if you're looking for Flu Mist, the nasal version of the vaccine, it's available at Martinsville's Health Department. The supply is limited.

And around Thanksgiving 2005, state workers, college faculty and school teachers would see a three percent raise.

A Giles County pastor accused of molesting several children will remain behind bars.

52 year-old Roger Holcomb of Pembroke Church of God faces 16-charges of aggravated sexual battery and taking indecent liberties with a child. This afternoon a judge denied bond. Holcomb is accused of molesting five children, ranging in age from seven to 13.
The Commonwealth says the alleged victims had developed a close relationship with Holcomb through his church and at their schools where he was a substitute teacher.
His trial is set for February.
