One person was killed and another injured after being shot this morning

It happened in the 3400 block of Bennett Drive around 4 a-m. That's at the Caru Apartment Complex. Police on the scene said one person was shot to death inside a car. The other person was injured and taken to the hospital. The victims' names are being withheld until family members are notified.
Authorities are looking for the suspects.

A Christiansburg man was scheduled to be put to death tonight, but he has been granted a stay of execution.

58 year old James Reid killed 87 year old Annie Mae Lester by strangling and stabbing her 22 times in 1996.
The Fourt Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond has granted a stay of execution, pending a U.S Supreme Court decision in a similar case in Alabama.

A Giles County pastor accused of molesting several children will remain in jail.

52 year-old Roger Holcomb of Pembroke Church of God faces 16-charges of aggravated sexual battery and taking indecent liberties with a child. Yesterday afternoon, a judge denied bond. Holcomb is accused of molesting five children, ranging in age from seven to 13.
The Commonwealth says the alleged victims had developed a close relationship with Holcomb through his church and at their schools where he was a substitute teacher.
His trial is set for February.

Centra Health is trying to protect those who are vulnerable to catching the flu.
The healthcare provider is asking anyone with a cough, runny or stuffy nose, and a sore throat not to visit folks in hospitals or nursing homes.
The company operates Lynchburg General Hospital, as well as Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg and Fairmont Crossing in Amherst.
Meanwhile, two local health departments are getting some more flu vaccine.

The Roanoke City Health Department now has an additional hundred doses of the serum. But it's only available to those at high risk and on a first-come-first-served basis by appointment.
Lynchburg's Health Department has about 50 doses which it plans to give out at a clinic later today starting at 8:30 a-m.
And if you're looking for Flu Mist, the nasal version of the vaccine, it's available at Martinsville's Health Department. The supply is limited.

Governor Warner's proposed state budget may bring in more money for education, and teacher salaries.

Warner presented his two year plan to lawmakers yesterday.
His budget is based on his tax reform proposals which include a penny increase in the state sales tax and a cut in the food tax.
He is recommending nearly two-point-four billion dollars in additional spending.
The bulk of that money would go to education, health services, transportation and public safety.
And two years down the road, state workers and teachers would see a pay raise.
