But Compton says their excitement suddenly turned into fear, when a car coming the opposite direction headed straight toward their bus.
The two vehicles collided head-on, sending the bus tumbling about 70-feet down an embankment.

The bus landed within feet from Luther McMillen's house.
McMillen says he was watching television when he heard a heard a noise.

All eight passengers of the bus were taken to nearby hospitals and are expected to recover.
The driver of the car, however, 21-year-old Telisa Ann Hunt of Henry died instantly.
State police says it appears Hunt was driving on the wrong side of the road for several feet before she crashed, but they're still trying to find out why.))

A dump truck wrecked in Franklin County this afternoon, leaving one person dead.

Authorities say the truck went out of control on Burnt Chimney Road, overturned and skidded into a tractor-trailer in the opposite lane.
The collision killed the driver of the dump truck, John Lee Tyree of Rocky Mount.

About 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled; a company from Roanoke is cleaning that up.

A Danville Police sergeant is charged with domestic assault, but will be allowed to stay at work.
Sergeant Jerry L. Pace was charged with two counts of domestic assault this morning in Pittsylvania County.
According to Danville Police, Pace was involved in a domestic dispute yesterday evening with his girlfriend. Pittsylvania County deputies were called after he left the residence.
Pace was released on bond pending a court appearance.
The Danville police department says Sergeant Pace has denied all allegations of abuse.
An internal investigation has been conducted and Pace will be allowed to work pending the final outcome of the court case.

The Roanoke Valley's Task Force on Homelessness says no one died on the streets this past year.
But officials say some people did die a few days after getting shelter.
