A church bus accident yesterday afternoon kills one person and injures eight others.
It happened around 2-thirty on Route 57 west of Martinsville.

State police say 21-year-old Telisa Ann Hunt of Henry crossed the center line into opposing traffic with her Nissan Sentra.
The car then hit a Freedom Baptist Church bus travelling in the opposite direction. The bus then hit the guardrail, rolled over, and went down a 67-foot embankment before coming to rest.
Eight people in the bus were injured, including the driver, 57 year old John Wasoski of Bassett. He is listed in critical condition.
Police say he did all he could to avoid the accident.
Wasoski and two other victims were flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and five were transported to Martinsville Memorial Hospital.

Some local Veterns helped box up a holiday feast yesterday.

Members of the AM-VETS of Post 40 started boxing everything from turkey breasts to bananas at six a-m yesterday morning and by 8 o'clock 150 food baskets were ready to make someone's holiday meal.
Each basket is filled with about 100- dollars worth of food and will be delivered to needy families across the Roanoke Valley.
The group also remembered troops overseas who won't make it home for the holidays.

The coupons can be used at Military Commissary Stores.
All funds for the project were raised by the groups 450 members.
Ondell estimates the organization puts 65- thousand dollars back into the community each year.
Anyone who's actively serving in the military or has been honorably discharged is welcomed to join.

More than 300 parisioners showed up for their second annual carolling event.
They walked several blocks from 20th street through the Tinker Creek Apartments, and back to the church.
People of all ages took part -- the kids had a hay ride, and seniors rode a bus to each stopping point.

Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church recently installed its 24- bell carillon.
The church is the only one in the valley with a real carillon.
All together the carillon weighs just under one ton, which made installation a challenge.
The bells sound five times a day and should serve the church for hundreds of years.

The crash left one person dead and eight others injured.

A Roanoke County home was heavily damaged by fire.

The blaze broke out around ten o-clock yesterday morning on Ballard Street.
Officials say it started out as a chimney fire, but quickly spread throughout the home.
Investigators say the man who lives alone in the house did not have a phone and tried to put the fire out himself.
Someone close by, however, saw the smoke and dialed 9-1-1.
Officials say the man was not hurt in the blaze.
Estimated damage is 15-thousand dollars.

The Danville Science Center was received an early holiday gift from the Kiwanis Foundation.

The Center recently received 165- thousand dollars from the Foundation.
The money will be used to support the butterfly station and help fund new visiting exhibits.
It will also go towards creating a phone system between the existing center and a new space in the Southern Railway Administration Building.
Director Jeff Liverman says the gift will help provide unique learning opportunities for southside's youth.
The Danville Science Center is open seven days a week.
