The state Supreme Court has told Roanoke County District Court Judge George Harris, he does not have to retire after all.
Harris had previously planned to retire March 31st, but changed his mind.
The Supreme Court decided it would allow him to rescind his retirement.
The 66-year-old judge is the Roanoke Valley's first and only full-time black judge, and has been on the bench for 19 years.
Before he became a judge, Harris was active in Democratic party politics, and participated in the federal court fight to force desegregation in Roanoke schools.
His term is scheduled to expire in 2009.
