Heironimus only will be a part of Virginia history by the end of next month.
All of the remaining stores - INCLUDING the one in Salem - will close by the end of February.
There's a year left on the lease at Spartan Square. The terms of the lease require Heironimus to remain in business through the end of what's been a 15-year agreement.
Property owner L-S Waldrop says he can hold the company to it, but he says "it doesn't make sense." He fully expects the parent company to close Heironimus in Salem when the rest of the stores- -in Roanoke and Lynchburg- -close February 29th.
Waldrop says he's confident he can find a new tenant, "equal to or better than what we have now."
When NEWS 7 broke this story Monday we incorrectly reported that the parent company, the Dunlap Company, lost money last year. Revenues were off by 11-and-a half percent from the year before, according to Yahoo Finance, but not in the red.
Unemployment in Virginia is the lowest it's been in more than two years.
The state average fell a tenth of a point to three point three percent.
The Roanoke metro area saw unemployment drop two tenths, coming in at an even three percent.
The Danville metro area saw the biggest improvement for the month. Unemployment there dropped eight tenths of a point. But at seven percent, it is still the highest jobless rate in the state.
The rate remained unchanged at four point three percent in the Lynchburg area.
