Researchers in Hong Kong say a new SARS patient in China has been infected by a new strain of the virus.
They say it may spread more easily from animals to humans than last year's strain.

Officials say the virus that infected the man was of the same origin as that found recently in weasel- like animals called civet cats.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization is urging China to be cautious in its planned mass slaughter of the civet cats.

Yesterday, NASA began receiving its second batch of black-and-white pictures from its Mars rover, Spirit.
The new images show more details of what scientists believe is the rocky bed of an ancient lake-- a sign that there was once life on Mars.
The first images came shortly after the rover landed on Saturday-- but photo opportunities don't come very often.

An accident in Floyd County claimed the life of a 19 year old woman Saturday night. State Police say Jessica Joyce Cupp was killed on Route 221 when the car she was in ran off the left side of the road, and overturned. Cupp was pronounced dead at the scene, and was not wearing her seatbelt. According to authorities, a passenger in the car fled the scene. State police arrested 31-year-old Michael Lovern Guthrie of Copper Hill and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident. He was arrested yesterday after seeking treatment at RMH for injuries he received in the crash.

Members of Roanoke City Council have filled a vacancy on their school board. This morning they selected Alvin Nash to fill the vacancy created by Melinda Payne's resignation. Council interviewed four candidates including Nash, Harry Davis, Alice Hincker, and Carla Terry. Within the last half hour they voted unanimously to appoint Nash to the position.
Meanwhile The Roanoke County Supervisors have elected a new chairman.
This morning, they selected Hollins representative Richard Flora to lead the board for the next year.

Barksdale wandered away from his grandparent's Halifax County home last Tuesday. Searchers found his body on Thursday about a mile and a half away. More than 150 volunteers took time away from their holiday to search for the little boy. And a friend of the Barksdale family says that's something to get excited about.

Fifty-five miners died on the job in the United States last year, but according to the U-S Mine Safety and Health Administration- that's a record low.
Three coal miners died in Virginia. West Virginia had the highest number of deaths with ten. Kentucky had nine. The national number of mining deaths for 2003 is the lowest since the federal government started keeping track of statistics in 1910. Industry representatives say training programs have helped reduce fatalities over the years.

But in his soon-to-be-released autobiography, "My Prison Without Bars," Rose says he never bet against his own team.

Excerpts from the book were released to "Sports Illustrated" for this week's issue.
He says he's hoping the admission will help end his ban from baseball, which is keeping him out of the Hall of Fame.

Southern gospel music singer Jake Hess passed away Saturday in Alabama.
The 76 year old singer had been hospitialized since a heart attack last month.
A four-time Grammy winner who's in the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Hess is best known to contemporary audiences as a regular member of ``Bill Gaither's Homecoming Friends.''

During his 60-year career, Hess also founded the Imperials and sang with The Statesmen Quartet.
Elvis Presley was a regular at Statesmen concerts when he was a teen-ager.
Later, Hess was a backup singer on several Elvis albums.
When Presley died in 1977, Hess sang at his funeral, as he had at the funeral of country legend Hank Williams in 1953.
