The latest traffic statistics point in that direction, but that only tells part of the story.

Preliminary numbers indicate 2003 saw the lowest number of fatalities on I-81 in more than a decade.
That is for the entire stretch of I-81 in Virginia from Bristol to West Virginia.

The number of fatalities on I-81 are especially down in southwest Virginia, specificially from Wytheville to Rockbridge County.
Statistics provided by the State Police show there were just nine deaths on the interstate in our region last year.
That is half what it was four or five years ago when it hit a high of 18 in 1999.
Troopers say there are several reasons for the decrease and not one thing in particular.

Although the number of fatalities are down on Interstate 81, accidents and injuries are actually up significantly.
2002 saw 200 accidents more than the previous year, and when the final numbers are caculated for 2003 it is expected to be even higher.

State Police say they are not surprised by that because the traffic volume on I-81 continues to rise.
To help alleviate the problem, the state will launch tomorrow the first highway safety corridor from Ironto to just south of 581.

Troopers say Southbound traffic was at a standstill near Fort Chiswell this afternoon when an overhead highway sign fell on a tractor-trailer.
No one was hurt, but the southbound lanes were blocked for about two hours.

One document mentions code words for meeting places in nine cities- Those cities include Winchester, Roanoke and Bristol, Tennessee.

Sheriff Mike Brown says his department recently seized six and a half kilos of cocaine worth more than 1-point-2 million dollars.
They also took control of more than 30-thousand dollars in cash and a car.

Since 2001, three families have attempted to adopt Tranda Wecker's twin girls. The first two families learned about the children when Wecker advertised them on a website.
The girls were officially adopted by a third couple after spending the state required 15 months in foster care.

((Chelsea and Austin along with their family relocated to Buena Vista last August and their athletic ability enabled them to fit right in. Chelsea, older by 15 minutes, is a key starter and Austin, only in his second year of organized hoops, a key player off the bench. Competition early in life helps them now.

Both have over a 3.75 GPA and they encourage each other

Both are intermediate pianists and accomplished vocalists, well rounded exceptional kids whose excellence can be traced to home. Music comes mostly from mom, sports from dad, a dad who this week, watched his former team lose in the national championship. Craig Lund, now an admissions counselor and assistant football coach at Southern Virginia University, won two national championships under Barry Switzer as a tight end in 74 and 75, takes the loss a little easier these days and he refuses to shove sports and a win at all costs attitude down his kids throats.))

52-year old Bobby Johnson not only works at Kroger, he also drives and lives on his own.
This month he's celebrating his fifth year on the job -- the longest he's ever been employed.
But getting and keeping a job hasn't always been easy.
Johnson recalls the words of a former employer..
