By a vote of 4 to 3 the board suspended the consolidation plan which would close five-schools outright and consolidate the county's high schools and middle schools.

A controversy for some water customers in Alleghany County is clearing up.

Customers of the Valley Ridge Water Company have been boiling their water for months because of excessive turbidity. Now Valley Ridge Water and Alleghany County have inked an agreement that will let the county extend a public water line to the area from Low Moor. Construction could begin as soon as this Spring. More than 150 customers, two medical clinics and two schools have been affected by the notice.

But House Majority leader Morgan Griffith said that Trumbo's appointment is virtually assured, and it would take "something huge to derail the Bo Train." Trumbo announced his retirement from the State Senate last March after more than a decade in Richmond.

Elliston firefighters know the meaning of quick response.

The assistant fire chief was looking out his window and saw the smoke.
No one was injured. Two older trailers being used for parts were destroyed and a storage shed was damaged.
