Good Evening. The turbulance is not in the air, but on the ground-
In less than a hour, pilots of Mesaba airlines are threatening to walk off the job.
The possiblity of a strike has already prompted the airline to cancel a number of flights including several in Roanoke.

You may be booked on this airline and not even know it.
That's because Mesaba is one of the regional operators for Northwest Airlines so your ticket will probably say Northwest and the plane will as well.

[SUPER=03-Roanoke]
Mesaba operates four daily flights for Northwest between Roanoke and Detroit.
The airline already canceled one flight tonight and another for tomorrow morning.
Even so, passengers will still be able to fly out of Roanoke because Northwest offers another service in the region.

As for the possibility of a strike, negotiators continue to meet in Minneapolis trying to work out a contract that would head off a strike.
Mesaba airlines and its 844 pilots have been unable to agree on pay and benefits.
(------------)
[LIVE= Justin /FULL BAM]
It is unclear how many passengers in our region could be affected by a strike because January and February are typically slow travel months for Roanoke Regional.
However, airport officials estimate a little over 100 people use Mesaba airlines in Roaonke on a typical day.
[DOUBLE BOXES=Jean & Justin /BAM;]
Jean, we should mention if you're re-booking on a Pinnacle flight it is based on seat availablity but those planes are bigger than the Mesaba ones so there is a good chance there won't be any problems.

A railroad union is fighting to keep the Roanoke Signal Shop open and nearly 20 members employed.

The company gave notice that it would close the shop only yesterday. All 18 positions were eliminated as of today.
(-------------)

[SUPER=03-Roanoke]
The signal shop was closed and the union says workers were escorted off the property.
Those 18 employees each have enough seniority to be eligible for field positions.
If they transfer, however, less senior workers could be furloughed.
N-S calls this a "business decision," designed to cut costs.
The company has also gone to court, seeking a preliminary injunction, claiming the union is threatening to strike.
If a work stoppage were honored by other N-S employees, the company predicts an immediate shut down of all rail traffic.
