The company gave notice to the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen only yesterday. All 18 positions in the signal shop were eliminated as of today.

The shop was closed and the union says workers were escorted off the property. Those 18 employees each have enough seniority to be eligible for field positions. If they transfer, however, less senior workers could be furloughed. N-S calls this a "business decision," designed to cut costs. The company has gone to court, seeking a preliminary injunction, claiming the union is threatening to strike. If a work stoppage were honored by other N-S employees, the company predicts immediate shut down of all rail traffic.
