A railroad union is fighting to keep the Roanoke Signal Shop open and nearly 20 members employed. The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen filed a federal lawsuit against Norfolk Southern late yesterday.
The company gave notice that it would close the shop only Thursday. All 18 positions were eliminated as of Friday.

The signal shop was closed and the union says workers were escorted off the property. Those 18 employees each have enough seniority to be eligible for field positions. If they transfer, however, less senior workers could be furloughed. N-S calls this a "business decision," designed to cut costs. The company has also gone to court, seeking a preliminary injunction, claiming the union is threatening to strike. If a work stoppage was honored by other N-S employees, the company predicts an immediate shut down of all rail traffic.
