The crash killed five year old Sheila Hernandez and injured her mother, Maria Hernandez. More than a dozen students were also injured.
The crash was so forceful it pushed the bus about 200 feet down the road- into the yard of a nearby home.
Investigators say the little girl was at the front of the bus when it was hit by the truck. The truck then hit her mother, who was standing nearby.
The driver of the truck told police he was searching for his cell phone at the time of the crash.
The patrol officers says the truck's driver Gary Garnett has received four traffic citations since 1986, including speeding and failure to stop for a bluelight.

Staunton Delegate Chris Saxman is introducing a measure to limit trucks to the center or right lanes of 81.
The restriction would apply only where the interstate expands to three lanes.
Saxman says the differences in speed between cars and trucks on hills is what causes most accidents on 81.
He says having separate lanes will allow a more consistent and continuous flow of traffic on the left.
He says "truck climbing lanes" are used in other states and have been successful in reducing the number of accidents.
