Norfolk Southern and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen were in federal court today. The railroad and the union spent more than two hours discussing the closing of the Roanoke Signal Shop and a possible strike, but no ruling was made. Both sides agreed not to take any action before a hearing on preliminary injunction is held in less than two weeks.

The Virginia Supreme Court today upheld the death sentence of an admitted killer from Halifax County.

James Bryant Hudson pled guilty to killing three of his neighbors in the summer of 2002. Walter Stanley Cole, his brother Thomas and wife Patsy all died from gunshot wounds.

At the time of the arrest, Hudson had a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun and a pistol in his truck. Prosecutors believe the murders stemmed from a long dispute over a private access road that James Hudson and the Cole family shared.

Mahaffy was unsure whether he'd be able to attend Sundance because of the costs of preparing the movie for screening but he managed to raise the necessary 60-thousand dollars. WAR will be screened six times at Sundance. Next week Mahaffy will head to the Rotterdam Film Festival.

Incumbent supervisor Tony Ware and school board candidate Carolyn Dixon lost by slim margins in November.
A three-judge panel Wednesday ruled that the District Five races were invalid because 56 people voted in the wrong precinct.
A new election will be held in November.. both boards have 45 days to appoint someone to fill the vacancies until then.
Ware, Dixon and school board member Betty Earle all say they'll seek that appointment.
Supervisor candidate Steve Arrington says he's still considering his options.
Both boards are expected to begin the application process when they meet next week.

Christiansburg Police are warning about a new scam popping up in local newspapers.
Investigators say someone is using an ad for a legitimate company, called Instaloan, but is changing the phone number.
The ads are for a 5-thousand dollar loan regardless of your credit, but you have to wire 600-dollars to an address in Canada.
Christiansburg Police say don't send any money. Instaloan is a legitimate company, but doesn't do business in the U-S.

Traffic in Salem was blocked for hours after a tractor trailer literally split in two.

The truck was carrying about 40-thousand pounds of diesel engines, bound for the Volvo truck plant in Dublin. Investigators say the rig crumpled because an adjustable axle was set too far back, putting more weight on the trailer than it could support.
