The union says it will not call for a strike against Norfolk Southern until the two sides meet before a federal judge later this month. Company and union officials spent more than two hours in a Harrisonburg federal courtroom yesterday, discussing the closing of the Roanoke Signal Shop and a possible strike in response, but no ruling was made.

Ware, Dixon and school board member Betty Earle all say they'll seek that appointment.
Supervisor candidate Steve Arrington says he's still considering his options.

A Hollins assistant film professor's work is being seen on the big screen at two prestigious film festivals this month. [VO NAT :14]

Jake Mahaffy's black and white movie "WAR" had it's first screening

at the Sundance festival in Utah Friday. It was the first time he'd seen the movie on the big screen. Afterwards, we caught up with him by phone.

"WAR" is an 84-minute long film about the struggles of those affected by the demise of America's small farms. Mahaffy was unsure whether he'd be able to attend Sundance because of the costs of preparing the movie for screening but he managed to raise the necessary 60-thousand dollars. "WAR" will be screened six times in Utah. Next week Mahaffy, who teaches film at Hollins Unviersity, will head to the Rotterdam Film Festival.

Even if you didn't like spinach as kid -- many children grew to love the spinach eating cartoon character Popeye.

And this year he's celebrating his 75th anniversary. The character made his comic debut in 1929 followed by a long movie and television career. Popeye even has his own brand of spinach.
The cartoon character will be honored this weekend in New York. The Empire State Building will be lit, "GREEN" of course, in his honor.

It was all part of the university's "Rock the Stacks" program.
Hollins is sponsoring several off-beat events like this to highlight its January short term.
The rockabilly group, the StarCity WildCats was last night's featured band.
