Roanoke authorities continue to investigate an apartment fire that left a small child dead.

Neighbors say three year old Kiante Poindexter was killed in a fire at the Tinker Creek Apartments on the two thousand block of Tinker Road.
Around 11 yesterday crews found smoke and flames pouring out of the front of the apartment.
Kiana Poindexter and her three children were in the apartment when the fire broke out.

Police have arrested two people in connection with the vandalism of one Roanoke church.

22-year-old Zachary Bryant of Moneta and 35-year-old Christopher Martin of Roanoke are charged with breaking and entering and felony property damage. Police say Bryant and Martin broke into the Mount Moriah Baptist Church last week and ransacked the place. Investigators say they were tipped off by several folks in the community. Bryant and Martin will be arraigned tomorrow. Police say they could face more charges.

A U-S helicopter reportedly attacked a house in Afghanistan leaving 11 people dead. Authorities in the region say the victims include four children.
They say the U-S chopper attacked the house in a village in southern Afghanistan early yesterday-- one day after U-S forces searched the village, trying to find Taliban insurgents.
Meanwhile, there's no comment yet from the U-S military.

Family members are waiting for recovery teams to find the bodies of 10 people presumed dead after a plane crashed into the icy waters of Lake Erie over the weekend.

It's not clear how it all began, but a hostage situation continues for a second day at a prison near Phoenix, Arizona.

Since early yesterday, two inmates have been holding a male and female prison guard hostage inside an armed tower.


Both were taken captive after an attack on ANOTHER guard.
Negotiators are working to secure the guards' release, and say that conversations are continuing.

A Campbell County Sheriff's Lieutenant died over weekend while referreeing a college basketball game in Winchester.
Efforts were made to revive 43 year old Tony Herndon.
Officials say Herndon collapsed and suffered an apparent heart attack during the second half of Saturday's game between Shenandoah University and North Carolina Wesleyan.

Today marks Edgar Allan Poe's birthday. And again, a mysterious visitor made an appearance at the writer's grave in Baltimore. The stranger, known as the "Poe Toaster", visits Poe's grave annually. He usually leaves cognac (kOn-yak) and three roses. But this morning, the man ALSO left a note saying Poe's resting place is NO place for French cognac (kOn-yak), but the cognac was in place out of respect for family tradition. The Poe Toaster's visit was first documented in 1949, a century after Poe's death.

The Patriots led 15-nothing at halftime.
