Bob Keeshan, who was better known to generations of children as Captain Kangaroo, died today at the age of 76.
Keeshan never planned to be a children's show host. He wanted to be a lawyer. But as Sharon Alfonsi tells us three generations of children are glad he changed his mind.

(( With his big pockets and bushy mustache, Bob Keeshan lured three generations of children to learn along with him.

Now, the man best known as Captain Kangaroo, has died in Vermont. His family says Keeshan who was 76 had suffered from a long illness.

The Captain Kangaroo show entertained children for more than 30 years. Making it the longest running children's show in Network history. But before he was known as the Captain, Keeshan, a former Marine, wore the costume of one of the best loved clowns of all time.

(nats honk honk)

After more than six years of hamming it up with Howdy, Keeshan shed the clowns costume and decided to create his own Children's program. Keeshan wanted a a slower paced and soothing show for kids. Captain Kangaroo was born.

(nats of the show)

Keeshan oversaw every aspect of the award-winning show down to choosing the commercials. The show was not filmed live and had no children in the cast. Instead, Keeshan spoke directly to the camera. His reason? He didn't want anything to come between him and his small fans. And nothing did. For 30 years, the Captain steered television programming into it's own unique direction taking thousands of children along for the ride.

(sot: Bob Keeshan

..... about children's programming-entertaining and educations.)

It may have been his big overcoat with large, kangaroo like pouches that inspired the nickname Captain Kangaroo. But it was Keeshans warm smile and straight talk that inspired so many children. Earning Bob Keeshan a place in their hearts and in television history.))

Officials say a pond dam in southern Augusta County is in danger of failing, threatening several families downstream.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the area near Steeles Tavern, saying rain could cause failure that would affect an area east of U-S Route 11 and south of Virginia 608.
A state dam safety engineer, says the dam ``could fail on the next rainfall,'' because a section on top of the dam has eroded to only four feet thick. He says he has requested state officials to have the pond drained.
The privately owned dam holds back a four-acre pond and is at least 46 years old.
