Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry swept the Virginia primary yesterday showing he has what it takes to carry southern states.

John Kerry took more than half the vote... well ahead of his nearest rivals, North Carolina Senator John Edwards and Wesley Clark. [PAGE 2]
None of the other candidates could score in the double digits. Howard Dean, Al Sharpton and Dennis Kucinich all got less than ten percent.

Voters across central and southwest Virginia generally voted in line with the rest of the state, choosing Kerry by comfortable margins. But six area counties went for John Edwards. The Roanoke City school board is getting mixed reactions from the results of much anticipated teacher survey on school violence.

The Roanoke Education Association conducted the survey and presented the results publicly at last night's school board meeting.
The school adminstration says the survey proves Roanoke schools are safe.
Critics however say when it comes to safety more needs to be done.

The school board also learned that the building a new Patrick Henry High School will cost more than expected.

The original cost for the new school came in at 38-million dollars.
The architect informed the board last night the projected cost is now nearly 47 million dollars.
Many board members say they are disappointed by that news, but would like construction to begin this summer as scheduled.
The board will approve the final design plans and the budget for construction at an upcoming meeting.

Police are investigating the disappearance of a Pulaski County man.

Howard Bowers, Junior has been missing for more than a week. The 30-year-old was last seen at work at Volvo Logistics in Dublin.

With help from police, friends and family began a search near the plant yesterday morning. They found a box of cigarettes and some money, but aren't sure if the items belonged to Bowers. Police are questioning some of Bowers's acquaintances, but so far, do NOT suspect any foul play.

Former Radford Police Chief Wesley Terry had been indicted for stealing and malfeasance in the office.
But yesterday, the charges against him were dropped after a deal was reached. In the deal, Terry signed an agreement not to sue the city for firing him.

The House Transportation Committee killed legislation yesterday that would take 15 passenger vans off the roads.

The Committee failed to advance a bill that would phase out the vehicles.
Joey Erndt's daughter, 14-year-old Jessica Lewis, was killed while riding in a 15-passenger van.
Erndt says the vans are unsafe and he is confident that eventually his efforts will be successful.

Patrick County authorities are searching for two suspects in a double murder.

Compromise was the key to a six year plan to equalize water and sewer rates in both Roanoke City and County.
