A broken sprinkler pipe created plenty of problems last night at the Hotel Roanoke.

The hotel was evacuated for nearly a hour.
The problem caused significant water damage to several rooms on the fifth floor and some damage to rooms on the floor down below.
Some guests had to be relocated to other rooms because of the damage.

Earlier in the day, it was a much different situation at a Roanoke motel. Police moved in and made an arrest as a murder suspect was leaving his room.

Roanoke Police received a tip from Tennessee authorities that 50- year- old Gerald David Thomas might be in the area.
They found the car he was driving in the parking lot of the Ramada Inn on Franklin Road. After staking out the motel for 12 hours they took him into custody late yesterday morning.
Carilion employees who work nearby were told to stay home until the incident was over.

A bill to raise Virginia taxes faces a final vote in the Senate later today, one day after Senators gave their initial approval.

The Senate approved legislation yesterday to raise the cigarette tax, increase the sales tax and bump up the income tax on the wealthiest Virginians.
Anti-tax Republicans tried but failed to remove the tax increases.
They also tried to delay action on the bill by offering an amendment that would subject the tax hikes to a voter referendum.

Road construction workers from Southwest Virginia say those in hard hats fave fallen upon hard times, so they travelled to Richmond yesterday to make their case.

Police are investigating the death of a man whose car crashed into a Roanoke home.

Police say 40 year old Jonathan Wayne Roberts was travelling on Noble Avenue, when his car crossed Lane Street and hit the deck of this home. He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he later died.

A Buena Vista company is illuminating pit roads across the country.

Everbrite is in the process of making large Sunoco signs for the new fuel sponsor. Each sign is about 18 feet wide, holds more than 250 feet of fluorescent lights, and is hand crafted at the Buena Vista facility.

The signs got their first major appearance at the Daytona 500 earlier this week. Everbrite has made enough signs to equip 10 NASCAR tracks so far, and is expected to have the remaining 12 tracks done by the end of April.

The check's in the mail, LITERALLY for 93- thousand Virginians.
They'll receive a check, thanks to an anti-trust settlement with the record industry.
Two years ago, eight music distributors and retailers agreed to settle a lawsuit alleging the companies conspired to inflate the price of C-D's.
Later today, the attorney general's office will start mailing checks for 13-dollars and 86-cents to Virginians who filed claims.
The companies will also give nearly two million dollars worth of C-D's to Virginia libraries, schools, shelters and public radio stations.
