About half of the 39 signs have been installed in Southwest Virginia. They'll be used to notify motorists of accidents and road- work that could cause delays. Signs will also be installed on intersecting roads like Interstate 581 so drivers will be aware of traffic problems before they get to 81. V-Dot officials say the signs are the first of their design in the state and must be tested extensively. Once they're complete they'll be monitored and updated 24 hours a day from Virginia Tech's Transportation Institute.
