Lawmakers were busy over the weekend dealing with the state budget. The House and Senate finance committees unveiled two different plans yesterday.

The House Appropriations Committee's plan involves spending cuts and rolling back 521-million dollars in tax breaks for businesses. The Senate plan involves increasing taxes by four-billion dollars over two years, including increasing the state sales tax to five-point-five percent. The committees will now have to decide on one budget for the new spending cycle, which begins July first. The current General Assembly session ends March 13th.

Some local Reservists got a big "Thank You" from the The Navy this weekend.

Those deployed during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom were recognized for their service. Bedford County native Tim Sexton served at Camp Patriot in Kuwait. He and his comrades loaded and unloaded ships under the constant threat of missile attacks. Yesterday, the men presented a flag that flew over the Camp.

Elizabeth Baker is an O-R nurse and has worked at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for more than twenty years. She says the reservist were able to go in and immediately take over for those who needed care.
