Good Evening. I'm Jean Jadhon.
President Bush calls marriage the most enduring human institution. He says a constitutional amendment will stop judges from changing its definition.
If Congress does pass an amendment it would still need ratification by three quaraters of the states.
The talk of changing the constitution is drawing fire from those who thing gays should be allowed to marry.

THE MAYOR OF SAN FRANCISCO RESPONDED. Gavin Newsome/D-San Francisco Mayor: He should keep his hands off the constitution of America. THE PRESIDENT DID OFFER WHAT HE BELIEVES IS A COMPROMISE TO THE CONTROVERSY. Bush: The amendment should fully protect marriage, while leaving the state legislatures free to make their own choices in defining legal arrangements other than marriage. BUT IN THIS ELECTION YEAR, DEMOCRATS SAY ITS A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO DISTRACT VOTERS FROM MR. BUSHS FAILURES AS PRESIDENT. Sen. Ted Kennedy/D-Massachusetts: By endorsing this shameful effort to discriminate, President Bush has betrayed his promise to be a uniter, not a divider. Gregory VanArk/Opposes Amendment: I pay my taxes, I was born here and I just want to be a human being like anybody else.
