The tanker carrying three and a half million gallons of ethanol was travelling from New York to Houston when an explosion sank the ship yesterday. An emergency official says the explosion came from a fire started on deck. Fuel from the ship's storage tanks has formed a nine-square-mile oil slick. Coast Guard officials say it's not clear how much ethanol spilled into the ocean, but they say the substance will likely have little impact on the environment.
