For the first time since the D-Day invasion in World War Two, Bedford's National Guard members are facing the potential for combat. Bedford officials will close West Main Street for a parade on Thursday as the 50 soldiers march from the armory to the National D-Day Memorial for a ceremonial send-off.

About 70 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union have been on strike for nearly two months now. Union leaders say morale remains strong despite the standstill in talks. Employees say they're concerned about a proposed increase in health- care premiums that would more than double the amount under their old contract. A three-year freeze of hourly wages is also a concern. Leaders say they ARE willing to negotiate with the company, but will stay on the picket line as long as it takes.

The tanker carrying three and a half million gallons of ethanol was travelling from New York to Houston when an explosion sank the ship Saturday. An emergency official says the explosion came from a fire started on deck. Fuel from the ship's storage tanks has formed a nine-square-mile oil slick. Coast Guard officials say it's not clear how much ethanol spilled into the ocean, but they say the substance will likely have little impact on the environment.
