Judge Sam Wilson has concluded death row inmate Percy Levar Walton understands he is to be executed and that his execution is punishment for his murder convictions. A ruling from the court within the last hour conforms with a psychiatrist's opinion laid out in court yesterday. Though the judge's opinion is certain to be appealed, it clears the way for Walton to be put to death for killing three people in Danville in 1996.

The government is dropping all criminal charges against one of Dr. Cecil Knox's two remaining co-defendants.

Bill James was caught up in the OxyContin case against Knox in an investigation that began more than three years ago.
James was a licensed professional counselor, working out of Knox's office. James was originally accused of racketeering and taking kickbacks, but the judge threw out those charges. Last Fall a federal jury failed to reach a verdict on the remaining health-care fraud allegations against James. He was set to be tried again in six weeks.

A Blacksburg business is blaming a defect in a new tank for last night's chemical leak.
An ammonia leak at Federal Mogul shut down the entire industrial park.

A motorist has been charged after hitting a Henry County School Bus head-on.
Police say 39-year old Rhonda Faye Handy crossed the center line on Stultz Road in Martinsville and hit the bus.
Handy, a bus aide and a student were taken to Martinsville Memorial Hospital. They've all since been released. Handy's been charged with cocaine possession and driving under the influence.

Police say this Contracting Enterprises bucket truck was hit by a United Rentals truck on Orange Avenue at 13th Street around 11:30 today. The bucket truck then tipped over. A passenger in the bucket truck and the driver of the United Rentals Truck, Ven Price, were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. Price has been charged with having defective brakes. Traffic was tied up for a couple hours.
