A cold front swept through the region, bringing locally heavy rains, and in some places, measured wind gusts reaching more than 50 miles an hour.
In many areas, large trees could not stand up to the force, and a number of roads were blocked.
Some houses suffered damage, or had close calls.
17-thousand customers in Virginia are without power now with many scattered outages reported, but most of them appear to be small and localized.
Fieldale is hit hardest with nearly 10 thousand customers without power.
A-E-P officials say it could be Tuesday before power is restored to all customers.

Lynchburg police have arrested one man in relation to a shotgun shooting last night.
Police arrested 43 year old Lance Dean Chandler after a victim was taken to the hospital with multiple pellet wounds to his legs, torso, and head. He was treated and released.
Chandler faces charges of malicous wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a felon, and shooting a missile at an occupied vehicle.

Pit road was a dangerous place to be today as Kevin Lepage clips the car of Jimmie Johnson. Johnson had a hot rod today leading in the early going, but that didn't help.
A little later, Ryan Newman does a spin-o-rama into the wall. Newman would finish way back in the field.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr., the points leader coming in, struggled with handling all afternoon, eventually taking the 8 behind the wall.
His teammate Michael Waltrip would join him there soonafter. Waltrip got a nudge from Bill Elliott and backed the 15 machine into the wall and was done for the day.
In the end, Kenseth won for the second straight race. Finishing second for the second consecutive event was rookie Kasey Kahne. Now your top 25 finishers.

The 38 year old Australian said he didn't see the ball go in, but he could tell by the crowd's reaction. The 18th is the Blue Monster's signature hole and also the toughest on the PGA Tour. Parry's 2nd career tour win earned him 900 thousand dollars.
