A faulty heating unit is believed to be the cause of a fire this morning at one Roanoke County school.

It happened inside a mobile classroom unit at Mount Pleasant Elementary.
Officials say a teacher's assistant spotted heavy smoke and flames coming from the building around 6:30 this morning, although they believe the fire may have been burning long before that.
School officials say this is the first time anything like this has ever happened.

Firefighters are warning some residents in the Houston, Texas area residents to stay indoors, as they battle a huge fire at a chemical warehouse.

Plumes of smoke can be seen for miles--
The fire broke out this morning at the Controlled Solutions warehouse.
Authorities are asking residents in several neighboring communities to seal themselves indoors.
Just as firefighters were getting a handle on the blaze, another explosion occurred.
The building is full of flammable materials, including pesticides. Firefighters also say the warehouse contains combustible items like wood and paper.
Officials aren't sure how the fire started.

Ashcroft is having surgery to remove his gall bladder.
Doctors say the procedure is needed to prevent a recurrence of gallstone pancreatitis, the condition that landed him in the hospital last week.
A surgeon at George Washington University Hospital says Ashcroft's gall bladder contains several stones ``that are of concern.''
Ashcroft will likely be hospitalized for another week to recover.

Authorities in Texas has arrested two suspects in a Patrick County murder case.

26-year-old Justin Cain Manning is being held on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
His wife, 23-year-old Virginia McKeehan Manning, is being held on charges of grand larceny of a vehicle taken from a homicide.

The two were arrested in Mexico.
They were turned over to American authorities in Brownsville, Texas on Sunday.
Both will be interviewed about the double murder of Kenneth and Deanna Williams, who were found shot to death in their home in January.

A boiler at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville exploded last night.
Officials say it happened around midnight and damaged several windows in the back of the facility and a rear boiler room wall.
Hospital C-E-O Joseph Roach says no one was hurt, and that an investigation is ongoing.
He adds that all patient care areas, including the emergency department, are operational.

Council members are deciding whether to approve a bond issue to pay for an estimated 11-million dollar conventional, gravity- fed sewer through the town's least developed area.

Students attending Ferrum College NEXT fall will be the first to try a brand new academic schedule.

The college plans to change the calendar to create a three week and 12 week block.
Under this plan, students would complete a single course in just three weeks and then take a normal schedule for the remaining twelve.

State lawmakers are trying to help doctors who are having malpractice insurance problems.

The House passed a bill yesterday to establish a state-run risk management pool for physicians who can not afford medical malpractice insurance.
Doctors whose premiums have increased 25 percent or more in one year will be eligible for the program.
The legislation also creates a special subcommittee to study the reasons behind the soaring cost of medical malpractice insurance.
The bill has already passed the Senate - it's now headed for the Governor's desk.

His agent says Winfield died Sunday of a heart attack.
He played dozens of roles in a career that spanned four decades, including the role of the father in the 19-72 film, "Sounder", which earned him his Academy award nomination.
Winfield also appeared in T-V's "Roots: The Next Generation" and picked up an Emmy in 19-95 for a guest appearance on "Picket Fences."
Paul Winfield was 62.

One of the coaches who has traveled the road with Friday Football Extra for all 20 years of its existence is retiring.

Willis White, the head coach at Salem High school for the past 21 years is stepping down at the end of the current school year.
The six-time Friday Football Extra Coach of the Year told News 7 sports last week that he would know something definite about his future in a couple of weeks.
However, sources within the Salem school system and the City's government have confirmed that he is stepping down.

White won four state titles and 8 regional championships in his more than two decades as the Spartans' head coach.
During that time he also won the admiration of perhaps the most football crazed community in the entire state.
In 2001, the Commonwealth also took note of his accomplishments, and inducted him into the Virginia High School League's Hall of fame.
The Spartans missed the playoffs each of the past two seasons, but that had little to do with White's decision.
